The time for breaking fast is an undeniable fact in the Qur'an. The only problem affecting the time is the verdict of some scholars and how they use some hadithes to interprete the verse wrongly. They have hidden the real time for breaking fast from us so people normally break their fast before the actual time for breaking fast. Now let's look at the verse and examine it. Surah Al-Baqara, Verse 187 ...وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ ثُمَّ أَتِمُّوا الصِّيَامَ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ ... ...And eat and drink until the whiteness of the day becomes distinct from the blackness of the night at dawn, then complete the fast till NIGHT,... It is advisable for everyone who is not familiar with this verse to open into the Qur'an and crosscheck. It is clear in the Qur'an that we must break our fast in the night and not in the evening. The reason for the importance of this verse is that, if a person intentionally break his fast before the time, that person will have to fast for 60 continuesly as a PENALTY. Or that person will release a slave or feed 60 people. Now, if someone breaks his fast before the night in the whole of 30 days, that person will pay a penalty of 60 days multiply by the 30 days which is equal to 1800 days. There is a hadith that says "hasten in breaking fast...". This hadith is applied to salaat as well. If Allah says we should hasten to prayers it does not mean that we can pray before the prayer time is due. In the same way, hasten in breaking fast does not also mean we should drink water before the fasting time ends. The time for the ending of fasting is night so we have to break the fast after nightfall. To know the time that NIGHT has really come for you to break your fast, look up into the sky in the evening at where the sun sets. You will see that the place is yellowish-red. This tells you that the sun is still hiding behind the clouds. So until the place become fully dark, you cannot break your fast.
